Pollard Festschrift

A Festschrift honoring Professor Morris Pollard, Director of Lobund Laboratory and former Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Notre Dame, was held May 24-26, 1996. The occasion marked the eightieth birthday of Dr. Pollard which occurred on May 24. Friends and relatives from all over the world joined in the celebration at Notre Dame which was highlighted by a banquet on May 25 attended by over 200 people at which both the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, Past President of Notre Dame, and the Rev. Edward Malloy, current President of the University, were featured speakers. Twelve presentations were given during the two and one-half day symposium, which will be published in 1997 as a supplement to Seminars in Surgical Oncology. Professor Y.B. Kim, Immediate Past President of the Association for Gnotobiotics, opened the symposium with a review of Lobund's history and its impact on gnotobiotics worldwide. Other speakers and commentators included Gertrude Elion, 1988 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine; Fred Murphy and David Huxsoll, Deans of the Veterinary Colleges at California and Louisiana, respectively; and James Curran, Dean of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta who introduced Prof. Luc Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute. Additional speakers were: Martin Scott, Scientific Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust of Great Britain; Herve Bazin of Brussels; Wolfgang Joklik of Duke University and Past President of the American Society for Virology; Gail Cassell, Immediate Past President of the American Society for Microbiology; Roy Curtiss of Washington University; James Wyngaarden, Past Director of the NIH; Gerald Murphy, Former Director of Roswell Park Memorial Institute; Ray Tennant of the NIEHS; and Charles Elson of the University of Alabama. European gnotobiologists were represented by Prof. Tore Midtvedt, Incoming President of the International Association for Gnotobiotics and Dr. Sieki Tazume, a former Lobund investigator, represented Prof. Shogo Sasaki and the Japanese Association for Gnotobiotics. Commemorating the occasion, Lobund alumni and friends presented the University of Notre Dame with a partial check and commitment toward the $250,000 needed for the endowment of the Pollard Graduate Fellowship.
